History of McLaren

"To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone."

Bruce McLaren

In 2010, McLaren Automotive took over for McLaren Cars. In 1985, McLaren Cars was established. The McLaren F1 was eventually released by the company in 1992. Prior to the establishment of McLaren Automotive in 2010, McLaren Cars was listed as a "dormant company" between the years 1994 and 2010. To enable investment in the new venture, the new company was initially set apart from the existing McLaren businesses. However, in July 2017, after Ron Dennis sold his shares in McLaren Automotive and McLaren Technology Group, the two businesses were once again combined.

Bruce McLaren began his competitive driving career in just a 1929 Austin Ulster that he and his father had built from parts into a race car, serving as the foundation of the supercar company. For the future racing car designer, each step of the restoration process was essential.

In May 1966, Bruce McLaren, a gifted engineer and racer, qualified in tenth place at a race in Monaco in his very own Formula 1 car that he had built. This was the beginning of McLaren's racing legacy. Just two months later, at the Formula 1 Grand Prix, where Bruce finished in sixth place, McLaren Racing scored its first points, laying the groundwork for future success.

Tragically, Bruce passed away in 1970 at the age of 32 while testing the McLaren M8D at Goodwood. Denny Hulme went on to win nine out of ten Can-Am races in the M8D in 1970 in honor of the team's founder.

McLaren P1

The mid-engine plug-in hybrid sports car known as the McLaren P1 is a limited-edition model made by British automaker McLaren Automotive. The P1, which made its debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, went on sale in the UK in October 2013 and all 375 of its units were gone by the end of the month. Early in December 2015, production came to an end. 34% of the units came from the United States, and 26% from Europe. The automotive press views it as the McLaren F1's replacement because it uses hybrid power and Formula One technology but does not have the same three-seat configuration. Later evidence supported the claim that the McLaren F1 was actually replaced by the Speedtail. The P1 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicle with a carbon fiber chassis.

Performance

The original McLaren P1, which was produced in a small batch of only 375 units, is driven by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 coupled to a single electric motor, generating a still-astonishing 903bhp and 664lb.

The McLaren P1 can reach 217 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. Even more impressive, it takes only 6.8 seconds to accelerate to 124 mph.

A McLaren P1 originally cost £866,000, but it seems unlikely that any of them left Woking without having any pricey add-ons installed, especially after McLaren Special Operations (MSO) got involved.

Although the P1™ is one of the most technically complex cars ever created, the systems all work together to deliver both performance and driver reward.

In terms of the technology it carries, it’s fair to say the P1™ is closer to the complexity of an aircraft than a conventional car. As such, it’s a showcase for the knowledge and passion of the engineering team that created it. But there are no gimmicks or pointless features – everything is focused on putting the driver at the heart of the dynamic experience.

The IPAS electrical assistance system is one of the most powerful hybrid powertrains ever fitted to a car, and has been designed to take on the gruelling challenge of sustained track use. Active aerodynamics mean the P1™ can maximise downforce and reduce drag, and the RCC (RaceActive Chassis Control) system gives the chassis unprecedented adjustability.

Design

The best-looking cars are the ones with real substance as well as style. The P1 is a stunning piece of automotive design, but you won’t find any needless ornaments or frivolous styling features on it. Every surface has been designed to work, every part given the same aerodynamic consideration as if it was part of an aircraft or a Formula 1™ car.

The bodywork is ‘shrink-wrapped’ as tightly as possible over the mechanical hard points of the car and the cockpit sits right at the center. This approach helps to reduce frontal surface area, but also makes it easier to manage airflow over the surface of the bodywork and into the engine’s roof snorkel intake and to the active aero components. It looks awesome, and it works very efficiently.

McLaren x Mercedes

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (C199, R199, or Z199) is a grand tourer that was jointly created by Mercedes-Benz of Germany and McLaren Automotive of Great Britain. It was available from 2003 to 2009. Mercedes-Benz owned 40% of the McLaren Group at the time the car was developed, and the two companies collaborated on its production. The name SLR, which stands for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" (Sport Light Racing), is a tribute to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, the vehicle's model. The vehicle was available as a coupé, roadster, and speedster, the last of which was a limited-edition model.

McLaren P1 GTR

GTR . The name alone suggests how significant the car is - the first McLaren to use the GTR moniker was the F1 GTR that won the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Without road-car regulations to hold it back, the P1™ GTR pushes everything to the limit. Available only to P1™ owners, production of the track-focused GTR began upon completion of the 375th and final road car. The mid-mounted powerplant has an output of 1,000PS (986bhp) and includes an ERS-style push-to-pass system. The large fixed rear wing features a Formula 1™-derived Drag Reduction System and the wing mirrors have been repositioned to the A pillars to put them closer to the eye line of the driver and reduce aerodynamic drag
